What Is RSS?

You probably have been seeing orange or buttons more and more. What is RSS and XML?

(Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering summaries of regularly changing web content.

Many news-related sites, weblogs, my sites and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

Benefits of using RSS

RSS solves a problem for you who regularly use the web.

  • It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving summaries of the latest content from the sites you are interested in.
  • You save time by not needing to visit each site individually.
  • You ensure your privacy, by not needing to join each site's email newsletter.

The number of sites offering RSS feeds is growing rapidly and includes big names like Yahoo News and Amazon.com.CNN or the BBC, or just about anything else, like my sites news on upcoming movie releases, DVDs, or just about anything else.

Yes, RSS is amazing. It's also completely addictive. No e-mail. No spam. It's so easy to subscribe and unsubscribe. If you get tired of a feed, you just have to delete it. It's fantastic!

And once you start, you'll soon be tracking all your favorite interests and news in the world.

What do you need to do to read an RSS Feed?

There are 2 options:

  • Use a client-side reader (software on your computer)
  • Use a server-side reader (you read RSS feeds through your browser)

Option 1

Use a client-side reader
(software on your computer)

Follow the easy 3 steps below:

Step 1 - Download an RSS Reader.

This is software that reads the "RSS feeds" from any site that published an "RSS feed".Recommended RSS readers:

For Win users

RssReader has a good following...

For Mac users

NetNewsWire has a free trial and is the best of a smaller selection.

Once you're set up, here's all you have to do...

Step 2 - Select your feeds

Right-click (control-click for Mac users) on any orange RSS (or XML) button on a site, blog or news source that you are interested in.

E.g. start by right-clicking on the orange button below.
Right-click and get started to my RSS feed

Then... Select Copy Shortcut ("Copy Link to Clipboard" for Mac), and paste that URL into your RSS Reader.

And that's it! You're subscribed.

Step 3 - Sit back and relax

You are in the knowledge that when your favorite site updates, you'll get a notification in your reader.

Option 2

Use a server-side reader (you read RSS feeds through your browser)

Yahoo!, MSN and Google has a fantastic, one-step solution.
